So you're visiting L.A. or you live in L.A., but you never seem to see any of those Hollywood stars? What to do? Well, here at chowbaby.com, we have come on the scene 911, for your culinary and entertainment purposes.
Let's start with breakfast, but wait! First, we have to divide Los Angeles into two major geographically sections, 1) The City, that is the Westside, Beverly Hills, Downtown, etc. 2) The Valley, that is Sherman Oaks, Encino, Studio City, Van Nuys, etc. Now, if you're a tourist and you don't know which one you're in, then here is the test.
Open the window. If it is beautiful, sunny, breezy, and it just makes you say, "I love L.A.," then you're in The City! If you're coughing, wheezing, suffocating from insufferable heat, and all the glitter looks like litter, then you're in The Valley. So, breakfast and stars!
In Venice (which is in The City), there is a wonderful restaurant full of character and charm, called The Firehouse. It is an old firehouse, converted into a restaurant, keeping the station motif. The food is excellent and not pricey. This is a real, "throw on your sandals, get some grub before a day at the beach" kind of place. And whom might you see there? Well, The Firehouse is next to Gold's and Power House Gym, so anytime a star is bulking up for a new role, they are working out next door. Regulars: Arnold Schwarzeneggar, Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Rolf Moeller (Gladiator). In the Valley, star gazing for breakfast is best done at The Good Earth. Moderately priced, interior waterfall, and high-tech lighting; this all health food, all the time. Regulars: Michael Jai White (Spawn), Danielle Nicolet (3rd Rock From the Sun), David Deluise (Jesse).
Staying in the Valley and going out for lunch, a good place to site stars is Teru Sushi. The atmosphere is busy; yet quiet (which is unusual for Los Angeles Restaurants). The patio also has a waterfall that is protected from the elements by fashionable netting (so you and the stars can mingle in private). Regulars: Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, David Hasselhoff. Back to the city, lunch time fare with star power and a menu that still has numbers on it is: Penevino. Crazy and fun, with the majority of the seating patio. Regulars: Costas Mandylor (Secret Agent Man), Ryan Philippe (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Seth Green (Austin Powers).
The sun falls and stars shine brightest-it's dinnertime! In the city, Rebecca's, in Santa Monica, is a great place to see Hollywood on the water, and ingest real Californian cuisine. Rebecca's is a bit pricey, but you get the ocean breeze, and real star power. Regulars: Tom Hanks, Jeremy Piven, John Lithgow. And do you love Dirty Harry, or Spaghetti Westerns? If you do, check out MO's in the Valley to see Clint Eastwood satiating himself with MO's incredible mash potatoes. The food is down to earth good, price is right, and the atmosphere very understated. Also, maybe you and Clint can have a drink at the bar.
One more thing, if you're just going out for coffee, a great place in the valley to see everyone is Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Regulars: Shara Michelle Gellar (Buffy), Freddie Prinze Jr. (She's All That).
What makes all these choices special, is the reasonable prices. Now, if you're willing to take out a small personal loan, then there are wonderful restaurants in which you will find more stars gathered than in the sky, places like Morton's, Le Dome, and Spago's. For the rest of us, bon appetite!
